About the Chef and the Love of Teaching

                      Welcome to Utensils Cooking School

Combine a passion for food and a love of sharing that passion and what do you get? For my husband, Rob, and I it was a live demonstration and hands on cooking school. Hi. My name is Lisa Edson and this is Utensils Cooking School-all of the tools you will ever need.

In spite of countless cooking shows on networks like Food Network, the Cooking Channel, Bravo and Esquire, we are so surprised at how many people don't learn to cook these days. Food has become a matter of convenience and cheap product. Gone are the days of teaching our children the traditions and love that comes with cooking and food and we are heart broken about it! Utensils is here to bring the joy back in to the kitchens of people everywhere.

I have been working in professional kitchens for almost 30 years. I have worked in and owned catering kitchens as well as on the line in a variety of high volume al a carte restaurants but there was creative food in my blood even before that.

I started painting and drawing at a very young age and went on to study Art at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers and at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Oh, don't worry. There was food too. Well, sort of.... My mom who did not love to cook and who worked full time, had me in the kitchen at a very young age. It wasn't until they bought a Bed and Breakfast in Cape May NJ that I learned how much I loved the combination of the two.

In 2009, I took cooking on full time as a new career choice after having to retire from a 20 year career paramedic job. Entering the professional kitchen at 42 years old and as a woman was about as difficult as I had heard it was going to be.

After years on and off in restaurants and casinos, I decided that I didn't love the egos and politics of the commercial kitchen. While trying to find my way in the career cooking world, I found my way to the love of my life. Rob and I met in 2010 and immediately realized that we had so much in common, especially a love of great food. He remains by my side as I wade through the new job world and suddenly there is so much more to it than wanting to teach people to make pots of soup or Sunday dinner.

You see, when I met Rob, he was suffering from Polycystic Kidney Disease for which the only cure was a transplant.  I was completely blown away by the restrictions in diet that renal patients have to endure. You know, you hear no potatoes, bananas, tomatoes but it is sooo much worse than that. In 2011 we were blessed when Rob received a kidney transplant and he is doing just incredible.

We have talked endlessly about how to help patients like Rob who have a hard enough road with dialysis and a ton of related illnesses that go with kidney failure. We even started having conversations with his doctor who was desperately trying to find a way to get better nutrition to his patients.

So here we are and we are so excited to jump in to this new adventure. We can't wait to spread our passion for food and joy in the preparation. Please visit us every week for up to date classes, recipes and tips, new and informative blog posts, videos and pictures, product, cookbook and restaurant reviews.

Please share the love and tell your friends all about us. Post questions about cooking techniques, unusual foods, equipment, all things and anything cooking! Thanks for stopping by
